a new place for lederhosen

In 1842, Germany’s economy was failing, so 21 nobles came up with a plan to move Germany to…Texas!  They struck a deal with the Commanche tribe living there at the time, a deal that was actually mutually beneficial (how very awesome of them!).  They dreamed one day of an ethnic German state Adelsverein where beer would flow and lederhosen might be worn year-round because of the lovely climate.  (Ok, so I might have taken some poetic license with the lederhosen bit.  I bet the beer part is accurate, though.)  Can you imagine Germany smack-dab in the middle of modern-day Texas?  If the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas had not run into so much debt, Texas – or at least the middle of it – might be a whole lot different today.

There are over 100 states that were proposed but never actually formed within the current boundaries of the U.S.  Perhaps your ancestor lived in or supported one of them!
